Getting Inspired + Staying Creative
How do you get inspired when you’re feeling stuck? How do you get your creativity flowing? Sometimes it can be so difficult to get out of your head + just get creative. I even feel uninspired + not creative quite frequently.
It’s especially important in these days of 2020 to get creative or inspired because the world is sh*t right now + times are tough. So I’m going to explain some ways of how I get inspired or creative everyday + maybe this will inspire you…
…Read.
I used to suck at reading, like never touch books. But as I got older, I try to read as much as possible (even though I still am the slowest reader). Some of my favorite books that have inspired me in business + in life are: The Magnolia Story by Chip + Joanna Gaines, #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso, UnInvited by Lisa Terkeurst, + Dying to Tell You by Lisa Najjar.
…Look at books.
I know I just said to read them, but it’s also so inspiring to me as a designer to just look at them. My favorite books to look at are: Whiskey in a Teacup by Reese Witherspoon, A Well-Crafted Home by Janet Crowther, + HomeBody by Joanna Gaines. Or any aesthetic cookbook. Even just thinking about these books makes me so inspired to design a book layout.
…Pinterest.
Oh man. Pinterest is my favorite platform invented. If I had to delete all social media except for one, I would keep Pinterest in a heartbeat. The things I see on there are so beautiful + loving. I don’t think I’ve seen a negative thing on Pinterest, now that I think about it. Everything, for the most part, is aesthetically pleasing. Pinterest either makes me want to design the best branding I’ve ever created, redesign my entire house, or blow all my money on new outfits. It’s that inspiring haha. Even my dad uses Pinterest!
…Get messy + make mistakes!
This is the hardest for me, but also the best for me. I am such a perfectionist + also the most indecisive libra you will meet. I get too inspired sometimes by things. I have deleted a number of Instagram posts because they just don’t look good to me, I have changed my home decor around my house countless times because I just keep getting inspired! Anyways, to get creative, the best thing is to sit down with paper, pens, even paint + just get to it. Doodle, splatter paint, collage magazine cuttings (my personal favorite), use sharpie, cross things out, do anything messy + just make all the mistakes! At first you might feel funky, but man it feels good to be imperfect! Then most of the time I just throw it away, like I needed to just get that out of my system. But, you should keep it if it feels good + you are inspired by it!
